ABOUT MARK

Born in 1953 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mark Malmberg earned a BFA in sculpture from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1977.  He drove his antique BMW motorcycle across the country in the late seventies to study at the University of California in Berkeley.  Focusing on abstract ceramic sculpture, he worked for the seminal abstract expresionist sculptor Peter Voulkos while earning his MFA.

Malmberg entered the world of computer graphics in 1988 when he joined fledgling studio Xaos Inc. in San Francisco, California.  Unique in its field, Xaos developed proprietary software to specialize in organic, fluid animation not otherwise possible at the time.  In early 1989, Malmberg took the role of Creative Director at Xaos, which he held for ten years.  Subsequently, he worked as a senior artist and Creative Director at Radium in San Francisco, continuing his development as a creative force in the digital realm.

Over the years, Malmberg has been recognized nationally and internationally for his work, winning awards from Art Futura, the National Computer Graphics Association, International Monitor Awards, a Silver at Ars Electronica as well as an Addy and two Emmy Awards.   His “Particle Peacock”, created for NBC and debuting with an interview on the Today Show, was voted “People’s Choice” nationally.

A husband and father of three, Malmberg has returned to his roots as a sculptor.  Pioneering a new sculptural genre, he is currently producing hand-built solar-powered robotic mobiles.  These incorporate Bluetooth wireless technology and microprocessors to choreograph movement and sound, and are powered solely by light.  Dedicated to alternative energy, Malmberg has invented construction technologies using carbon fiber reinforced bamboo to support his revolutionary sculptural forms.  Powered by an endlessly renewable source, and embodying the fantasies of flight and weightlessness, his mobiles dance in a continuously changing balance – a hopeful symbol of a better future.
