Singapore - Capella Installation   Mark Malmberg website

This is a sculpture I engineered, built and installed for glass designer Nikolas Weinstein of San Francisco, with assistance from co-workers Jared Adams and Dave Johnson. The client is Capella, a new six star resort hotel on Sentosa Island in Singapore, designed by Norman Foster, and the piece hangs in the ballroom under a large glass dome. The original model for the piece was made by Mr. Weinstein in paper, and measured approximately 7 inches tall. From this I built a 1:5 scale model and subsequently translated this into the full scale finished piece.

Comprising more than 10,000 pieces of glass tubing, and weighing approximately 2000 pounds, the sculpture shipped in one twenty-foot and two forty-foot containers by sea. We installed the large shapes using a set of five chain-motor hoists with pulleys and cables, mapping the shape locations on the floor, based on measurements from the scale model, and using laser measurement to set their heights. The installation took just under three weeks and went pretty much like clockwork.
